Gov. Larry Hogan provides Capital Gazette shooting memorial, renamed ‘Defenders of the First Amendment Memorial,’ could be funded through state budget

The Capital Gazette shooting memorial could be fully funded by the state if Gov. Larry Hogan’s capital budget passes through both bodies as it was introduced. The fiscal 2021 capital budget creates a state debt that would allocate $300,000 — the estimated full cost of the project — to Anne Arundel County with the specific purpose of creating a memorial for the June 28, 2018, newsroom attack that killed Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, Rebecca Smith, John McNamara and Wendi Winters.
